Amazing Wonders of Ylang-ylang

Ylang-ylang (ee-lahng-ee-lahng), Cananga odorata, is a small but beautiful flower of the cananga tree. This tree has been valued for its wonderful scent. This fast growing tree of the custard-apple family, exceeds 5m (15ft) per year and attains an average height of 12m (40ft). The evergreen leaves are smooth and glossy, oval, pointed, with wavy margins, and 13–20 cm (5-8 in) long. The flower is drooping, long-stalked, with six narrow greenish yellow (rarely pink) petals, rather like a sea star in appearance, and yields a highly fragrant essential oil.

Ylang-ylang derives from the Tagalog (Philippine Islands National Language) either from the word "ilang"  which means "wilderness", alluding to its natural habitat, or the word "ilang-ilang" which means "rare". This plant is native to the Philippines and Indonesia and is commonly known in Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia.

It is believed to relieve high blood pressure, normalize sebum secretion for skin problems, and is considered to be an aphrodisiac. According to Margaret Mead, it was used as such by South Pacific natives such as the Solomons where she did much of her research. The oil from ylang-ylang is widely used in perfumery for oriental or floral themed perfumes (like Chanel No. 5). Ylang-ylang blends well with most floral, fruit and wood smells.

In Indonesia, ylang-ylang flowers are spread on the bed of newlywed couples. In the Philippines, its flowers, together with the flowers of the sampaguita, are strung into a necklace (lei) and worn by women and used to adorn religious images.

Ylang-ylang's essential oil makes up 29% of the Comoros' annual export (1998). (Wikipedia)

Raising Up a Child

I’m eminently excited because in the next two days I will be seeing my nephew. He is such a lovely child and very funny. He likes to play with my sisters and my Mom and Dad. He is two years old and hasn’t seen him for quite some time. It made me think how it feels raising a child. I was raise by my parents beautifully. We were raised by realizing the importance of obeying parents and following their precepts. We were reminded in Ephesians 6:11, to follow our parents in the Lord for this is right, for this is what God wants us to do.

I ask myself what If I disobeyed my parents. Where will I go? What will I do? Will they still accept me for what I have done wrong? Will they forgive me?

The Bible tells about a rich man who had two sons. The younger one asks for his share of the estate. The father didn’t mind but share the property into two. One for the older and the other half was given to the youngest. The older son stayed with his father and help with their business. On the other hand, the younger son set off and flees from his father’s care. Went to a distant country and squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in need. He found himself hired by a citizen in the country, feeding pigs in his field. He began to feel hunger while watching the pigs happily eating, but he doesn’t have anything to eat.

He came to realize that his father had so many workers with enough foods to spare, while he is starving to death. He then decided to go back to his father’s care and planning of asking his father to hire him as a worker. But, while he was still on his way home, he saw his father from afar, waiting for him, longing for him to be back. His father run to his son threw his arms around him and kissed him.

He said to his father, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate.

Meanwhile, the older son was on the field. On his way home, he heard music and dancing and feasting. When he knew that his younger brother came back and that his father killed the fattened calf and has a feast, he was angry and mad and refused to go in. His father went outside the house and pleaded with him. He told his father that he has been working so hard for years and that he never disobeyed his father’s order but then, not even a single goat was given just to celebrate with his friends. But when his younger brother, who squandered his property with prostitutes, comes home, he killed a fattened calf just for him.

The father pleaded and said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'

With this parable from the book of Luke, raising a child is not easy. As a father you need to understand and continue to love your sons/daughters even if it causes you so much pain. Unconditional love is important in raring a child. There are three lessons I’ve learned from this story.

1.    Choices. As a child we made a lot of choices. We decide so easily on a lot of things without even thinking it twice. Choosing from what we think is right could sometimes lead us to destruction and more than that death. Our parents, on the other hand, guide us into the right direction believing that we, as their children, will obey everything that they told us to do. Our parent aims only the good for their children and nothing else. But we tend to disobey, follow our own way of choosing.

2.    Consequences. This applies the saying “What you sow you will reap”. Whatever things we did in the past will surely root and will bring forth consequences. IF we plant something bad in the past, we will also reap the same thing. An apple tree will not bear orange fruit. Consequences all depends on the choices that we’ve made. If we choose death in the past we will also reap eternal death. If you are planted in a friable soil, then you will surely not grow properly which will also lead to not bearing a good fruit.

3.    Compassion. From the Latin word means: “co-suffering, is a virtue – one in which the emotional capacities of empathy and sympathy (for the suffering of others) are regarded as part of love itself. Like the father in the story, compassion runs in his blood. Like any other parents, they would also do what the father does. Accepting what the child has done wrong and then asking for forgiveness is being compassionate. Like our Father in Heaven who also accepted us despite of the failures that we’ve done, will also rejoice and celebrate with a great banquet to let the world know that his son who is lost is now found.

I came to realization that being a father or a mother is not an easy profession. You need to have a lot of guts to be able to present a very good role model to your children. Being in that role needs patience and understanding especially when you have one or more kids at home.  To children, we should always follow and obey our parents as all they want from us is to become a good person and a role model in this country and to other people. We should always listen to their advises and teaching for they only wants the best for us.

Lunch at aVeneto Pizzeria Ristorante

One of my colleague will be leaving us since she had an offer to a different company. Well actually, her contract ended with us so she is not transferring. We had a send off lunch out with her at Aveneto Pizzeria Ristorante in Glorietta. I had a lot of fun since the food there is really amazing. The pizza is great. The pasta is so cool and tastes so good. The other foods are also great.

The venue is also great. The ambiance is amazing. We arrive at the location at around 11:30AM and then people starts coming in as well.
It was such a great fun, though we will be missing Val (colleague who will be leaving us).

I want you to check some of the pictures!

Coloring books for adults...

Front cover
Its been a while since I haven't written anything. I was caught up with my busy work and schedule. Month- end Reports had just ended so I am kinda free and not tight for the coming days. Last Sunday I stayed at home because its raining so hard outside. Its my time to regain energy and sleep and rest from my busy sched. It's also my chance to clean the house as I wasn't able to do it for many weeks..Lol.

I ran into this bunch of books that I have kept for years and found one of my coloring books. This is actually a coloring books for adults. Sounds funny right? But, yes! it is for adults. This is a more complicated coloring books, not the usual coloring books for children with just one figure to color. This one is more complicated. There are few pages on this book and I'm just on my first page. Normally, one page would last i think a day if you really give your time to it.
There also different themes for this coloring book. The one that I have is the Countryside theme. More on Nature type thing.

my work (not done yet)
I figure out that doing this stuff brings back the childhood in me. It makes me feel calm and contented. Sounds absurd but it really is. It also makes my mind work more as you know coloring needs imagination and color coordination which I haven't done for a long time. There is really no need to practice my color coordination at work unless the color coordination of the way I dress up. But this one is different. It really soothes me. It calms me and it also keeps my mind at peace.

I will be coloring more books in the coming days. I am planning of buying more coloring books. I think this will practice my artistic side which I only used during my elementary years.

The Dark Night...

It's raining cats and dogs when darkness swathe my city as blackout strikes at 8:30PM one evening. Silence covers the whole town and the feeling of melancholy starts to sink in. I began to feel sadness in the air every time it touches my being. I sat down for a while hoping that light will return from its senses and uncover what’s being hidden in darkness. Depression starts to move, realizing that blackout would take longer than I expected. I tried to listen to music to dispel sadness but it seems it pushes me more down into depression until I can no longer hold back. Even the music goes with what the nature is experiencing.

I realize that being clothed in darkness takes away happiness and things that we loved and enjoy. Darkness means so many things to some. Darkness could mean problems we encounter each day. It could also mean trials that a person is going through, it could be about love or money. You can also consider it as something that hinders you to fulfill your dreams, ambitions and goal. To some it might be about their work that stops them from being effective due to the fact that there is something that blocks their way to achieve a certain status. But whatever darkness is to us, it only means three things:
  • It always hinder you to reach the destination that leads you to a better and great opportunity,
  • It blocks your eyesight from seeing the blue print of the future as it covers the beauty of the things around you, and lastly
  • It limits the person's ability to see what is outside of its comfort zone.
Going back, I mumble and startled about what had happened. I began to realize that I was like a dried and dead leaf flowing down the river until it carries me to the place called nowhere. I tried to hold back and stand up to release the emotion I had. I started thinking about things I need to do to keep me away from flowing and wishing that I could hold on to something. Then it reminded me of so many that will salvage me from darkness.
  • Even little creatures, like ants, can still work and do things even if they cant see other ants. They use their antennas to be able to communicate with their co-ants and to do their work. This means, we can do and use the things that we have. Use the talents and abilities that are given unto us.
  • Fireflies uses their light to guide them and to reach their destination. As human, we should also shine like fireflies. We should glow to the Glory of God.

I believe, that the greatest shield for us to conquer this darkness is to be close to God and let His light shine before us. I believe that their is no greater power in this world to defeat darkness than to be get close to God and be like Him. So every time the clouds starts to dark and rain starts to fall, It doesn't bother me at all. I have a great light that's within me.
